A Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) é uma revista de luta livre profissional fundada em 1979 pelo editor Stanley Weston.[1] A PWI tem sede em Blue Bell, Pensilvânia, e é publicada pelo Kappa Publishing Group. A revista é a mais antiga publicação de luta livre profissional em língua inglesa ainda em circulação. A PWI é publicada bimestralmente, além de lançar edições especiais, como o "Almanac and Book of Facts" anual e a edição "PWI 500". A revista reconhece diversos campeonatos mundiais como legítimos, de forma semelhante ao que a revista The Ring faz no boxe.

A PWI é frequentemente chamada de "Apter Mag", em referência ao seu fotógrafo de longa data, Bill Apter — um termo usado para revistas de luta livre profissional que mantêm o kayfabe (a apresentação das histórias e rivalidades como se fossem reais). Nos últimos anos, a PWI tem se afastado de relatar as storylines como notícias reais e passou a incluir comentários editoriais sobre os bastidores e o funcionamento interno da luta livre profissional.

Desde 1991, a PWI publica seu "PWI 500" anual, listando os 500 melhores lutadores masculinos do mundo. Em 2008, a revista criou a lista anual "Top 50 Female Wrestlers", que mais tarde foi expandida e renomeada para "Top 100 Female Wrestlers" em 2018, e novamente em 2021, como "Top 150 Female Wrestlers". Em 2020, a PWI adicionou uma lista anual das "Top 50 Tag Teams", classificando as melhores duplas de luta livre profissional do mundo.

História

A primeira edição da Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) foi lançada em 1979. A revista logo se tornou conhecida por não quebrar o kayfabe em seus artigos, tratando tradicionalmente todas as "angles" (ou storylines) como reais. No entanto, nos últimos anos, a revista adotou uma abordagem editorial entre o kayfabe e o "shoot", diferenciando entre rivalidades exibidas na tela e controvérsias nos bastidores. A PWI não se limita a cobrir apenas as principais promoções de luta livre profissional, pois também cobre diversas promoções independentes nos Estados Unidos. A revista também publicou outras edições especiais, incluindo: PWI Wrestling Almanac & Book of Facts (desde 1996), Women of Wrestling e um boletim semanal intitulado PWI Weekly (de 1989 a 2000).

PWI Women's 250

A PWI tem publicado uma lista das melhores lutadoras profissionais a cada ano desde 2008 em uma edição especial da revista. Assim como na lista dos lutadores masculinos, os redatores da PWI escolhem a posição da lutadora com base em um período de avaliação designado que começa em meados de junho; qualquer conquista de uma lutadora antes ou depois desse período não é considerada. A lista originalmente era limitada a 50 lutadoras e era chamada de Female 50. Desde então, foi expandida e renomeada para Women's 100 em 2018 e Women's 150 em 2021. Foi expandida e renomeada novamente para Women's 250 em 2023.[37][38]
