Richard Keith Johnson (Upminster, 30 de julho de 1927 – Londres, 5 de junho de 2015) foi um ator, escritor e produtor inglês de teatro e cinema. Descrito por Michael Coveney como "um ator muito 'parado' – autoritário, calmo e cativante",[1] ele foi uma figura constante no cinema e na televisão britânicos desde a década de 1960 até a década de 2010, frequentemente interpretando personagens sofisticados e autoritários.[1] Ele teve uma carreira teatral notável, principalmente como membro fundamental da Royal Shakespeare Company, [2] e foi aclamado como "o melhor ator romântico de sua geração".

Biografia e carreira

Johnson nasceu filho de Frances Louisa Olive (nascida Tweed) e Keith Holcombe Johnson em Upminster, Essex.[3]

Johnson frequentou a Felsted School e queria ser ator em vez de entrar no negócio de tintas da família. Ele estudou na RADA e, devido à escassez de mão de obra em tempos de guerra, fez sua primeira aparição profissional relativamente rápido, no palco em Manchester com a companhia de John Gielgud em uma produção de Hamlet em 1944.

Ele serviu na Marinha Real de 1945 a 1948.[1]

Johnson interpretou o Sr. Wickham em uma adaptação para a TV de Pride and Prejudice em 1952 (com Peter Cushing como Darcy) e foi D'Artagnan em uma adaptação para a TV de The Three Musketeers (1952).

Em 1958, ele apareceu na segunda produção de Peter Hall no teatro, Cymbeline, ao lado de Peggy Ashcroft. As críticas foram fortes, elogiando Johnson como "O melhor ator romântico de sua geração".

Johnson interpretou o papel principal na produção de Tony Richardson de Pericles, Prince of Tyre, em 1958. No mesmo ano, atuou em Twelfth Night (como Sir Andrew Aguecheek) para Peter Hall.

Hall assumiu a direção da companhia em 1959 – ela foi renomeada para Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), e ele convidou Johnson para fazer parte do primeiro grupo de atores a serem nomeados Artista Associado da RSC, uma posição que ele manteve até sua morte.[4]

Johnson foi o segundo nome nos créditos, depois de Kim Novak, em The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders (1965), dirigido por Terence Young . Quando as filmagens terminaram, Johnson e Novak se casaram.[5] Nessa época, ele expressou interesse em escrever e dirigir, além de atuar.[6]

Johnson interpretou o Coronel Stewart em Khartoum (1966), ao lado de Charlton Heston e Laurence Olivier.

Ele atuou ao lado de Anthony Quinn e Rita Hayworth em The Rover (1967), novamente dirigido por Young.[7] Ele anunciou que havia formado sua própria empresa e que estrelaria An Alibi for a Playboy, mas o filme não foi produzido.[8]

Ele interpretou um oficial romano em Columna (1968) e Horatio Nelson em Emma Hamilton (1968), com Michèle Mercier.

Johnson interpretou Rembrandt na televisão britânica em 1969 e foi Cássio na versão de Julius Caesar com Charlton Heston (1970).

Ele atuou em The Fifth Day of Peace (1970) com Franco Nero, Hamlet (1970) com Richard Chamberlain, Sin (1971) com Raquel Welch, A Man About a Dog (1972), A Marriage (1972) e I Want to Marry Your Son (1973).

As aparições posteriores de Johnson incluíram sua atuação em The Seagull em Stratford em 2000, além de The Whistle-Blower (2001), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), The Royal, The Robinsons, Whatever Love Means (2005) como Louis Mountbatten, 1º Conde Mountbatten da Birmânia, Wallis & Edward (2005) (como Stanley Baldwin), Rebus, Scoop (2006), Doc Martin, Midsomer Murders, Waking the Dead, The Raven (2007), Two Families (2007) e Jump! (2008) (que ele também ajudou a produzir).

Em termos de cinema, ele esteve em The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008), Spooks, Lewis, A Velha Loja de Coisas Desoladas (2011) e Silent Witness. Ele teve um bom papel em Radiator (2015), dizendo "Desde o início, senti que era um roteiro superior para a tela."[9]

Vida pessoal

De seu primeiro casamento com Sheila Sweet, Johnson teve dois filhos. Sua segunda esposa foi a atriz americana Kim Novak. Ele também teve outra filha, Jennifer Johnson, com sua terceira esposa, Marie-Louise Norlund,[1] e um quarto filho, Nicholas Johnson, com Françoise Pascal.[11] Johnson então se casou com Lynne Gurney em 1989.

Morte

Richard Johnson morreu em 5 de junho de 2015, aos 87 anos, após uma breve doença no Royal Marsden Hospital em Chelsea, Londres.[12]
