John Richard Alden (23 de janeiro de 1908, Grand Rapids, Michigan – 14 de agosto de 1991, Clearwater, Flórida) foi um historiador e escritor norte-americano, reconhecido por suas obras sobre a era da Revolução Americana.[1]

Biografia

John Richard Alden formou-se pela Universidade de Michigan, onde obteve o grau de Bacharel em Artes (BA) em 1929, Mestre em Artes (MA) em 1930 e Doutor em Filosofia (Ph.D.) em 1939.[2] Lecionou inicialmente no Michigan State Normal College (atual Universidade de Eastern Michigan [en]) e, posteriormente, na Universidade de Bowling Green State, em Ohio.[1] Entre 1945 e 1955, foi professor da Universidade de Nebraska-Lincoln. Em 1955, ingressou na Universidade Duke, onde presidiu o Departamento de História de 1957 a 1960 e, em 1963, foi nomeado Professor James B. Duke de História.[2] Aposentou-se da Universidade Duke em 1976.[1] Além disso, lecionou nas universidades de Chicago e Columbia.[2] Também atuou como revisor para o The New York Times Book Review [en].[3]

Em 1934, Alden casou-se com Pearl B. Wells (1906–1979). Em 1980, casou-se com Kathleen C. Smith, que faleceu em 1990. Ao morrer em 1991, deixou uma filha do primeiro casamento e uma neta.[1]
