Jerry Vale (nascido Gennaro Louis Vitaliano ; 8 de julho de 1930 – 18 de maio de 2014) foi um cantor norte-americano de música pop tradicional, de ascendência italiana. Durante as décadas de 1950 e 1960, ele alcançou o topo das paradas de sucesso com suas interpretações de baladas românticas, incluindo um cover do sucesso de Eddy Arnold " You Don't Know Me " (1956) e " Have You Looked into Your Heart " (1964). Jerry compôs inúmeras canções em italiano, muitas das quais foram usadas em trilhas sonoras de filmes de Martin Scorsese.[1]
Jerry mostrou seu amor pela música italiana com seus álbuns, I Have But One Heart (1962) e Arrivalderci, Roma (1963), repletos de standards italianos como "Amore, Scusami", "Ciao, Ciao, Bambina", "Chegadaderci, Roma", e "O Sole Mio".[2] Suas interpretações de " Volare ", " Innamorata (Sweetheart)" e "Al di là" tornaram-se canções clássicas ítalo-americanas.[3]
Biografia
Jerry nasceu no distrito de Bronx, Nova Iorque, filho de pais imigrantes italianos[4] e cresceu na região de Wakefield, que era composta principalmente por famílias ítalo-americanas na época.[5] No ensino médio, Vale arrumou um emprego como engraxate em uma barbearia. Seu chefe, Vito Veneziano, admirado pela melodia que cantava enquanto trabalhava, resolveu pagar aulas de música para Jerry. O jovem começou a cantar em musicais do ensino médio e em uma boate local. Ainda adolescente, ele deixou a escola para trabalhar em uma fábrica como lubrificador ao lado de seu pai.[5][6]
Carreira
As primeiras apresentações de Vale em casas noturnas o levaram a shows adicionais no início da década de 1950, incluindo uma temporada de três anos no Enchanted Room, um clube em Yonkers. Quando Paul Insetta (empresário de turnê do cantor Guy Mitchell), na audiência, o prestigiou, ofereceu-lhe um contrato de gerenciamento e continuou a orientá-lo. Paul providenciou para que Vale gravasse algumas demos de músicas que havia escrito e as apresentou à Columbia Records . Guy Mitchell apresentou Vale a Mitch Miller, então chefe de A&R da Columbia Records. Vale assinou um contrato de gravação, com Insetta como seu empresário por muitos anos.
A primeira gravação de Vale com a gravadora Columbia, com acompanhamento de Percy Faith e sua banda, foi "You Can Never Give Me Back My Heart",[7] que alcançou o 29º lugar na parada Billboard Hot 100, tornando-se o primeiro sucesso do cantor no país.[8] Posteriormente, ele lançou "Two Purple Shadows", que teve um desempenho melhor, conquistando a 20º posição na lista da Billboard.
Sua versão de " The Star-Spangled Banner ", gravada no final de 1963, foi presença constante em muitos eventos esportivos por anos, e o disco de ouro que Vale recebeu foi exibido no National Baseball Hall of Fame em Cooperstown.[9]
Seu maior sucesso viria em 1964, com a canção " Have You Looked into Your Heart ", que alcançou o topo da parada Easy Listening. Seus outros singles também tiveram bom desempenho nessa parada, com canções como " Time Alone Will Tell " e "Dommage, Dommage" alcançando o 6º e o 5º lugar, respectivamente.[10]
Em 1972, Vale lançou um álbum tributo a Nat King Cole, que alcançou o nº 200 nos Estados Unidos.[11]
Na década de 1990, Jerry fez participações especiais no filme Goodfellas de 1990 e no filme Cassino de 1995, ambos dirigidos por Martin Scorsese.[6]
Vida pessoal
Em 1959, Vale casou-se com a atriz Rita Grapel. Sua biografia, "A Singer's Life", de Richard Grudens, foi publicada em 2000 pela Celebrity Profiles.
Morte
Jerry Vale morreu de causas naturais enquanto dormia em 18 de maio de 2014, em sua casa em Palm Desert, Califórnia.[6] Vale tinha 83 anos. Ele e sua esposa tiveram dois filhos, Robert Vale e Pamela Vale Branch.[5] Ele está enterrado no Cemitério Forest Lawn, em Cathedral City, Califórnia.
Na cultura popular
Como ator, Vale apareceu como ele mesmo nos filmes Goodfellas e Cassino. O cantor também teve aparições especiais em séries de televisão como The Sopranos, Midnight Caller, Who's the Boss? e Growing Pains.[12][13]
No filme de animação da Disney de 2016, Zootopia, há uma paródia de Vale chamada Jerry Vole.
Vale é interpretado por Steven Van Zandt no filme de 2019, O Irlandês.[14]
