Charlie Ruggles (nascido Charles Sherman Ruggles 8 de fevereiro de 1886 – 23 de dezembro de 1970) foi um ator cômico americano cuja carreira que abrangeu seis décadas, Ruggles atuou em cerca de 100 filmes, frequentemente em papéis cômicos e de personalidade amena. Ele também era o irmão mais velho do diretor, produtor e ator de cinema mudo Wesley Ruggles (1889–1972).

Charlie Ruggles nasceu em Los Angeles, Califórnia, no ano de 1886. Apesar de ter se formado em medicina, Ruggles logo se viu nos palcos, atuando em uma produção teatral de Nathan Hale em 1905.^[1] Em 1912, trabalhou na companhia teatral do Alcazar Theatre em São Francisco em uma produção de The Dawn of a Tomorrow.^[2] No Majestic Theatre de Los Angeles, ele interpretou o Soldado Jo Files no musical The Tik-Tok Man of Oz de L. Frank Baum e Louis F. Gottschalk em 1913.^[3]

Ruggles mudou-se para a Broadway para atuar em Help Wanted em 1914. Seu primeiro papel no cinema foi no filme mudo Peer Gynt no ano seguinte.^[4] Ao longo das décadas de 1910 e 1920, o ator continuou a aparecer no cinema mudo, embora sua paixão permanecesse o teatro, atuando em produções de longa duração como The Passing Show of 1918, Battling Buttler e The Demi-Virgin e Ladies' Night in a Turkish Bath de Avery Hopwood. Um de seus maiores sucessos no teatro foi Queen High um de seus últimos trabalhos antes de um hiato de quase 30 anos, produzido em 1926, também interpretou Peter Braley em Spring Is Here realizando 104 apresentações em 1929.

A partir de 1929, Ruggles começou a aparecer em filmes falados. Sua estreia foi em Gentleman of the Press, no qual interpretou um repórter de jornal cômico e alcoólatra. Ao longo da década de 1930, fez par romântico com a atriz cômica Mary Boland em uma série de farsas domésticas, notavelmente Se Eu Tivesse Um Milhão, Six of a Kind, Ruggles of Red Gap e People Will Talk. Nesta época, é mais lembrado hoje por interpretar o caçador de animais selvagens em Bringing Up Baby e o bilionário Michael J. "Mike" O'Connor em It Happened on Fifth Avenue.

No verão de 1944, ele teve uma série de rádio de intitulado de The Charlie Ruggles Show na CBS.^[5]

Charlie Ruggles retornou às telas de cinema em 1961, interpretando Charles McKendrick em The Parent Trap e Mackenzie Savage de The Pleasure of His Company reprisando o papel pelo qual havia ganhado um Prêmio Tony em 1959. Em 1963, interpretou o avô da estrela do cinema mudo Corinne Griffith em Papa's Delicate Condition.

O matrimônio de Charlie Ruggles com Adele Rowland (1914–1916) terminou em divórcio após dois anos de convívio.^[6][7] Ele então se casou com Barbara Guillan e eles permaneceram casados até a morte dela em 1941.^[8][9] No ano seguinte, o ator casou-se com Marion LaBarba e permaneceram casado até a morte dele em 1970.^[10]

Charlie Ruggles morreu de câncer no Saint John's Health Center em Santa Mônica, Califórnia no dia 23 de dezembro de 1970, aos 84 anos.^[11][12]

Ele está sepultado no Forest Lawn Memorial Park em Glendale, Califórnia, no Jardim da Memória, perto de seu irmão Wesley Ruggles.^{[13][14][15][16]}
