Introdução

While these handi dish washing helpers are probably not known outside of Canada, UK, Australia, anyone who has used them has likely loved them until they begin to leak. This guide does not touch on the foam, scrubber head. I might write that one up later if this gets any traction. This guide is specifically about the handle, and the coloured, opaque part of the handle (most often red), and its tendency to leak the contents after some time.

REMEMBER: Devices such as this which are designed to be disposable have poor resilience to dismantling and reassembly. You are attempting to prolong the life of the item before you inevitably dispose of it.

    • If it isn't already obvious, clean the outside of the handle. Remove the detergent that has spilled around it. Don't worry about the contents, we will come to that later.

    • Detergent will certainly dry the skin on your hands by its nature of making oils water soluble.

    • Your skin oils become water soluble, and are washed away, leaving your hands feel dry. In some, dry skin can lead to skin cracking.

    • Cracked skin can lead to mild infection.

    • Mild infection of cracks along the working wrinkles of your hands prevents healing, leading to long term wounds. All of this can be avoided by having much less contact with detergents.

    • Now referred to as the "red part", this opaque piece comes away from the soft transparent piece rather simply.

    • Grip the transparent end in one hand, then red part in the other.

    • Apply force, pushing both towards each other.

    • Lever the red part away from the transparent part. It will sound a pop as it yields. Separate the two pieces.

    • Clean around the hole of the transparent piece. Caked up thickener, an ingredient in many kitchen detergents, can build up here preventing a seal.

    • The Red part will come apart into these 3 pieces. The housing, the guide rail, and the sled. Inside the sled is a soft, white cap which achieves the seal against the hole from the previous step.

    • Pop out this cap, clean all of the debris away. Do not damage or deform the cap, as it is vital for the operation.

    • Wash all of the components of debris and caked thickener gel.

    • Insert the white cap into the sled.

    • While I have aligned this black dot with this small cut out, I don't believe it is necessary for the operation. I think it's just a manufacturing side effect.

    • Insert the sled into the housing, white cap side facing you. With the white cap pointing towards the open end of the housing.

    • The guide rail has a fragile alignment pin which engages with this square hole.

    • The bare flat side faces you.

    • With care, align the square pin into the square hole.

    • Gently rock the guide so that it aligns with the sled (which you can no longer see). Gently push the guide 'inwards', to have the pin engage fully.

    • Slide the sled somewhat during this procedure to ensure that everything is aligned.

    • When it all comes together it should give a satisfying snap sound.

    • At this stage the guide is only held in by that fragile square pin. It *can* be levered out, destroying the pin. Do not flex the guide plate away from the housing.

    • Simply insert the ugly end of the transparent piece into the red part.

    • As you apply some force to push them towards each other, lever the red part back into the transparent part. It will give a pop.

    • Test the sled, it should have a determined feel.

Conclusão

As stated in the beginning, this is a disposable item and it has next to zero resilience to being dismantled and reassembled. You may only get one go at this before the wear caused by the process further weakens the connection between the plastic components.

This item is far too inexpensive to attempt to prevent this wear, or to strengthen against it.

REMEMBER: Even doing this once means one less goes into the bin. Sometimes a small win is all you can get, it doesn't make it any less meaningful.
