Introdução

It is a very common issue the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor ED 70-200mm f/2.8G IF focus ring stuck at close end. This will show Ifixers how to fix this.

  1. AWG2RVNotLEBB4J5
    • The lens. Focusing mechanism traps in close-up end, worsens over time.

    • First, you better download the "AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor ED 70-200mm f/2.8G IF REPAIR MANUAL". (The attatchment)

    • Remove Tripod mount (The one can be removed with only hands)

    • Remove tripod mount base by remove four screws.

    • short

    • long

    • Unscrew switch board and disconnect all three FPC's

    • Remove tripod ring, by removing three hidden screws. check the Repair Manual

    • Remove eleven screws and separate rear group. There is an empty hole.

    • Take the front group. remove zoom rubber ring.

    • Peel the tape, and keep if you don't have a replacement.

    • Remove two screws.

    • Remove three screws and remove "4th Lens Group"

    • Unscrew three outer screws and remove Aperture Blade Unit

    • Do NOT manipulate the Aperture calibration screw! (RED mark)

    • Do NOT manipulate the whatever calibration screw! (YELLOW mark)

    • Remove eight black screws and lift "Zoom Fixed Ring" and "MF Ring"

    • Here is the ISSUE. internal focus ring has contact with Distance readout PCB. The PCB is mounted by double sided tape. This is a design flaw. double sided tape drifts over time, and let the PCB slip out.

Does the pcb need to be glued towards the outside or the inside of the lens body, like away from the center of the lens cylinder or towards the center? I guess ill just see it when i take it all apart

Thanks for the tip, I did a easier fix based on this info. Pull back the rubber for the focus ring. Which will expose a thin piece of brass held down by tape to the body. Peel back one side of the tape. Which will expose a window into the lens, I found these screws in question and since the issue is due to rubbing and friction with the pcb. I just backed the screws out a tiny bit, less than a quarter of a turn. Tried the focus ring seems to be much better and less getting stuck at the close focus distance. Put the tape back on and slid the rubber focus ring back. Did some quick focus racking and seems pretty good. Not the best but you don't need to risk taking the lens apart.

    • More detail. The infinity end is glued using some better glue(dark material), while the close end is NOT.

    • The fix is

    • Mark or remember the position BEFORE removing two screws and contact brush! but relax, this part is not extremely precise.

    • Lift the PCB. Cleanup double sided tape. Glue the PCB back firmly against the inner edge.

    • Use proper glue, like "high viscous super glue" or "2-part epoxy resin". Do NOT use low viscous glue, it will mess up and contaminate the contacts.

    • Now put it back, following these instructions in reverse order.

    • Screw tighten torque list.

    • Internal M1.6 screws: 0.12N.m.

    • Tripod mount M2.0 screws: 0.2N.m.

    • 2 screws on switch panel: 0.06~0.08N.m (watch out the plastic is very fragile)

Does this fault affect manual focus also ?

Thanks

Arnold Livingston -

It does. And might be worse, because MF sometimes goes faster than AF, then stuck deeper…

Hi Terrance,

So is your lens good til now after this fix? By the way, what type of glue specifically did you use?

t2psalm -

Good as brand new :D. I used “super glue“ and learned the lesson. Luckily the mess is not very bad, cleaned that up and the great lens is happy again.

Will whis work even if my focus ring is stiff (but moves and “jumps”) AF works finw

Never get to know by just thinking.

This was exactly my problem..this guide and the Nikon repair manual were very helpful. Took a couple hours.

Hi Terrance, thank you very much for the guide. Mine has the same issue, I found a video on youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFOdU76x...

It explains how to do it without full disassembly. Do you think faint-hearted ones like me should try this one instead?

Interesting, this guy’s method is easier to operate and much less work. You can also use 2-part epoxy. Not much will go wrong, just use some fine tool (ex toothpick XD ) to apply the glue.

Terrance -

It works - perfect. Thank you so much!

gsmax -

Distance PCB is available throu 2 windows on focus ring. It is hard to properly re-glue it via them, but you may check the issue and fix it temorally this way

belyavin -

you can try apply a little drop of epoxy to the creeping end of that PCB through the small window.

This is fantastic, thank you for taking the time to put this fix together. My AF is intermittent at the close focusing end and with a little massaging the AF starts up. So this seems to be the fix to my problem.

However, I also find that the lens has opposing AF fine tune adjustments, meaning that at 70mm it front focuses and at 200mm it back focuses. Fixing one end with the +- fine tune adjustment in the D850s in camera calibration would accentuate the problem on the other end. Can this problem you show the fix to here, negatively impact the len's ability to focus to accurately focus?

I will post my experience repairing this issue, Thanks Again

Very funny, I had forgotten I posted this question back in 2022. Posted again below

I am having the close focus jamming issue that is clear. But, I am curious if this can negatively impact auto focus accuracy throughout the range. My auto focus can be slightly off and inconsistent. I plan to do this repair, Thank you, Mike

Mike Connor -

To my knowledge this will not affect AF "accuracy", AF system on modern SLRs is a closed loop system. But this might affect distance readout. SLR's are well known suffers from AF accuracy issues, because of the different light path between AF system and sensor. That's why some DSLRs have this "focus fine tune" option.
