Introdução

If your SPOT X SPOT XB Satellite Messenger isn't charging correctly or not turning on, you can replace its battery to maintain proper operation and extend the life of the device. This guide will walk you through a few simple steps to safely remove your old battery and install a new one.

Passo 1

Turn off the device completely by holding the power button for 10-20 seconds to force a shutdown.

Passo 2

Remove the seven 4.1 mm screws from the back of the device using a T4 Torx screwdriver.

Passo 3

Gently separate the back cover from the rest of the device.

Passo 4

Desolder the battery cables from the motherboard.
Remove the battery from the device.

There are two batteries used in this SPOT-X.
The one above is a 2 wire battery Howell Howell 3.8V 3400mah Li-Polymer Battery 704476 D:2
A 3 wire battery is also used: Howell 3.8V 3400mah Li-Polymer Battery 704476 S0 3.

Rather then de-soldering the main board, which some can do successfully, but can also lead to damaging the board, instead cut the existing wires leaving about 20mm attached to the main board, and then just solder on to those, with no chance then of causing any damage.

Spot Tracker -

One further comment. The 3 wire battery version includes a thermistor in the battery so that it can report it's temperature back to the main board. This is done to ensure the battery does not over heat during charge or discharge, presumably in response to issues that arose from the earlier 2 wire batteries. My guess is that you have to replace like with like, as the early boards probably don't have the terminal or the smarts to deal with a thermistor capable battery.
