If your ThinkPad T540p laptop isn't maintaining BIOS settings or the system clock is incorrect after the power connector is unplugged, use this guide to replace the laptop's CMOS battery.

As devices age, their batteries degrade as a result of general use and time. Over the lifespan of a battery it will hold less and less capacity and eventually will hold no charge.

Before beginning, make sure to power off the laptop completely and disconnect it from the charger.

    • Before proceeding, power down the laptop and unplug the device from the power supply / charger.

    • Flip the laptop over so the bottom is showing.

    • Orient the laptop so that the the battery bump is facing away from you.

    • On the back of the laptop are two sliding locks for the battery. These are located just beneath the battery and are marked with a little lock icon on either end.

    • Using both hands, pull these sliding locks away from each other.

    • They will stay in place once they have been fully engaged.

    • Push the battery in the direction away from where the sliding tabs are.

    • If the battery does not slide out, make sure the sliding locks are fully engaged.

    • To install a new battery, slide the battery back in with the sticker side of the battery facing down, and in the same orientation that it came out in.

    • The screw in this panel is captive, so it will not come loose from the panel.

    • Using a Phillips #1 screwdriver, unscrew the one M2 x 5mm screw holding the CMOS battery door in place.

    • Using an opening pick or your fingernail, work your way around the edges of the panel popping the clips off that hold the panel in place.

    • Locate the CMOS battery and its connector.

    • Gently unplug the CMOS battery from of motherboard.

    • Remove the CMOS battery.
