Introdução

Use this guide to enter Diagnostic Mode on Whirlpool top-mount (top-freezer) refrigerators with the matrix-style temperature control used on WRT3 and WRT5 models. Diagnostic Mode lets you run built-in tests, including Forced Defrost, and check for stored fault indications in the fail condition display. These models can be picky about timing, so this procedure focuses on a repeatable entry method.

Ferramentas

    • Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet.

    • Wait about 30 seconds to let the control board capacitors drain.

    • WARNING: Treat all wiring as energized until the cord is unplugged, and don’t touch any exposed electrical connections.

    • Open the refrigerator door to access the temperature control and LEDs.

    • Press the temperature control button to cycle to the lowest setting.

    • Confirm only the first green LED is illuminated.

    • Press and hold the temperature control button and the door switch at the same time for five seconds.

    • Hold the door switch closed with a finger as if the door were shut.

    • Note: If entry is inconsistent, use the timed power-cycle method in the next step.

    • Plug the refrigerator back in.

    • Wait about five seconds.

    • Listen for the compressor relay to click on, then open the door.

    • Quickly set the control to the first green LED and press and hold the temperature button and door switch for five seconds.

    • Do the entry command within 30 seconds of plugging the refrigerator in for the best success rate.

    • Watch the UI panel after the entry command.

    • Confirm the refrigerator interior lights come back on and no LEDs are illuminated on the UI panel.

    • Wait for all LEDs to illuminate for about 10 seconds, then turn off.

    • Note: The “all LEDs on, then all LEDs off” sequence confirms Diagnostic Mode.

    • Press the temperature button to advance to the next diagnostic test mode.

    • Wait about three seconds after selecting a test to let the refrigerator start that test.

    • Don’t press the temperature button rapidly, because the control won’t advance until the current test has started.

    • Note: Forced Defrost is accessed as one of the diagnostic test modes on these models.

    • Advance to the last series of tests where no LEDs are on to reach fail condition mode.

    • Look for a two-part LED sequence if a fault is present.

    • Confirm all four LEDs flash first, then the UI flashes the actual error code pattern.

    • Note: Fail condition codes may indicate a sensor, heater, or compressor driver issue.

    • Press the temperature button once more after the fail condition display to return the refrigerator to normal operation.

    • Unplug the refrigerator and repeat the entry sequence if you need to re-enter Diagnostic Mode.

    • Repeat the timed power-cycle method if Diagnostic Mode won’t trigger on the first attempt.

    • Make sure the control is set to the first green LED before holding the temperature button and door switch for five seconds.

    • Make sure you perform the entry command within 30 seconds of plugging the refrigerator in.

    • If Diagnostic Mode never triggers even with the reset method, the control board is likely faulty on this style of refrigerator.

Conclusão

If you need to run diagnostics again, unplug the refrigerator and perform the same timed entry sequence from the beginning. If you can’t enter diagnostics at all despite correct timing and button actions, suspect a failed control board.
