Use forced defrost to help clear ice from the ice maker, the evaporator panel area, or when the freezer isn’t cooling properly. This guide shows the exact button presses and on-screen cues for four common Samsung refrigerator control styles, plus how to cancel the test if you need to stop it.

Press and hold the Power Freeze and Fridge buttons at the same time for eight seconds.

Release the buttons when the screen goes blank and the refrigerator beeps.

Press the Fridge button to cycle through the available forced modes.

Select RD for refrigerator defrost, or FD for freezer or whole-unit forced defrost, depending on what your model offers.

Listen for the compressor and all fans to shut off when the defrost cycle begins.

Let the defrost cycle run for up to 20 minutes.

Unplug the refrigerator to stop the forced defrost if needed.

Reactivate the forced display mode and cycle until the screen is blank to disable forced defrost without unplugging.

Press and hold the Energy Saver and Fridge buttons for eight seconds until the control panel beeps.

Press the middle-right button to cycle through the four forced modes.

Use RD to defrost only the refrigerator cabinet, or use FD to defrost the refrigerator, freezer, and ice maker.

Leave the display on the selected mode for six to eight seconds to start the defrost and shut off the compressor.

Re-enter the forced modes, cycle to the fifth mode where no code is displayed, and wait six to eight seconds to cancel and stop the beeping.

Press and hold the Fridge and Flex Zone buttons for eight seconds until the display flashes.

Press the Flex Zone button once to enter forced mode and show FF on the display.

Press the Flex Zone button again to show OFR for constant compressor operation at 3600 RPM.

Press the Flex Zone button again to show RD for constant defrost of the upper cabinet.

Press the Flex Zone button again to show FD for defrosting the fresh food section, freezer, and the ice maker if installed.

Press the Flex Zone button until nothing shows on the display, then wait eight seconds to cancel and return to normal operation.

Back out of any open app on the Family Hub screen.

Find and open the Fridge Manager app on the Family Hub screen.

Tap the upper-right corner, then the upper-left corner, alternating about five times total for roughly 10 taps to open Engineering Mode.

In Engineering Mode, select Fridge Function Test, then select Forced Defrost Mode.

Select FD to run all defrost heaters, or select RD to run only the refrigerator defrost system.

Press the Test Cancel button to end forced defrost on the Family Hub system.

If you can’t cancel a forced defrost from the controls, unplugging the refrigerator terminates the test. Button labels can vary by model, so focus on the button positions and the display cues like a blank screen, RD, FD, FF, OFR, or no code displayed.
