Have a broken paper towel dispenser? Completely stumped as to how to fix it? Use this guide to repair your dispenser quickly and easily.

Passo 1

Open the paper-towel dispenser's cover using your Philips head screwdriver and turn it counter-clockwise.
Some paper-towel dispensers require a key to unlock them. The lock is generally located on the top of the paper-towel dispenser.

Passo 2

Look for jams. Check every space inside the paper-towel dispenser for wads of paper towels. Remove any stray bits of paper towel that you find.

Passo 3

Tear off the paper towels just above the rollers.
Remove the roll of paper towels. Pull the lever of the paper-towel dispenser a few times to dislodge any remaining paper towels.

Passo 4

Replace the roll of paper towels. Make sure the roll is coming over the top towards you. Sometimes the paper towels will still come out of the dispenser if the roll is backward, but will tear off inside the dispenser and cause jams.
Push holsters outwards when attempting to put a new roll in.

Passo 5

Feed the paper towels through the rollers. Pull the paper-towel dispenser's lever three or four times to make sure the paper is completely fed through.
Don't get your fingers caught!

Passo 6

Close the paper-towel dispenser's cover. Turn tool clockwise to lock. If there is a key, lock the paper-towel dispenser.

The roll should be loaded the other way, so the paper is feeding from the bottom of the roll. This is true of almost all dispensers, and is definitely true of the "push paddle" dispenser shown. When new these will have a diagram showing this, with a big X across the picture of it loaded as shown here.

If pushing the bar on this style of dispenser doesn't dispense, the most likely culprit is either the one-way bearing or the gear it's pressed into. Those little nylon gears always eventually crack, and then don't grip the outer housing of the bearing anymore. With no paper loaded it will turn the roller, but as soon as there's any resistance the gear will just spin freely. As far as I know, GP does NOT sell a replacement gear. My university got rid of these for that reason. You can find models online if you have access to a 3D printer that can print in something impact resistant, e.g., nylon.

If the gear isn't cracked, put a drop of light oil on the inner rollers of the small bearing inside it.
