Introdução

Use this guide to replace a worn-out or dead battery in your Fairphone 4.

If your battery is swollen, take appropriate precautions.

Passo 1

Be sure to power off your phone before you begin.
Insert your thumbnail, or a prying tool like a spudger, into the notch at the bottom right of the back cover.
Pry the back cover up to start separating its plastic clips.

Passo 2

Using your thumbnail or an opening pick, slide along the right side of the phone to loosen the plastic clips.

Passo 3

Slide along the bottom of the phone to loosen the plastic clips.

Passo 4

Slide along the left side of the phone to loosen the plastic clips.
Lift the back cover to release the rest of the plastic clips and remove it.
To reinstall the back cover press it firmly into place until you hear a snap from the plastic clips.

Passo 5

Use a fingernail or a prying tool at the marked notch to lever the battery out of its recess.
Lift the battery out of its recess and remove it.
Remove the battery.

Thank you for this very helpful guide. However I fail to see why you would conclude that replacing the battery is 'moderate'. Could you elaborate on this a little bit more, please?

For me 'moderate' means it is (very) complicated (i.e. plenty of steps) but feasible in general (i.e. there is a good chance you're not gonna brick your device) for which there is only one escalation level left: 'not feasible at all'. Non of that is true for the FP4. Could removing the battery more user-friendly, though? Well yes, of course but it is still by far very simple and straight forward.

thanks for your comment. You're totally right, the "moderate" rating was due to an oversight as it is the default in the system. I've changed the rating.

Once a new battery is fitted, how do you check its service life? I bought a brand new one from Fairphone site in November 2025 and after 24hrs on charge it failed to hold the phone on, consequent recharges seem similar- no life! . I hear something about "calibrating" - apart from running it from full to empty, is there some secret keycode to set a calibration- such as found on the early iphones???? Is the battery condition held on the phone or in a memory chip on the battery? I checked the phone with the old battery and it lasted nearly 12hrs. I tried a counterfeit battery from Cameron Sino and that seems to run for days right out of the packet. So I am inclined to think Fairphone are selling duff batteries.

Hi Bobon,

You might be able to check the condition of your battery using the recently released iFixit app. Please note that we are still actively iterating on our battery health feature to improve its reliability and accuracy. Battery status is always an estimate, so there's no quick way to do calibration without getting enough data points for the phone software to get the estimation right. Learn more about battery calibration here: Battery Calibration. Based on what you're describing, the battery is likely faulty, but the seller should be able to provide you with a replacement in that case. Even with good Q&A processes in place, this can happen due to storage and other environmental factors.

I am not sure steps 2,3,4 are really necessary in this guide.
