This guide will display instructions on how to change the battery in a 2013 - 2017 Ford Escape key fob. This easy to use step by step guide can help you easily repair your key fob to continue usage. The only item required for the restoration of the fob is a replacement battery. The process is brief, taking only minutes to complete.

    • Slide over the key release switch on the back of the fob.

    • Remove the metal ignition key from the fob.

    Push the button against the spring and use a fingernail to pry out the key.

    • Insert the ignition key in the notch on the left with the FORD logo facing upward.

    It works better if the end of the key is placed under the square protrusion in the center area next to the hole for the key. Use the key to gently, but firmly, lever the protrusion away from the main case. You will feel it 'pop' as the back cover comes away.

    The key is too clunky to fit next to the battery to pry it out. Use the tip of a pocket knife blade or a pointed plastic spudger to get down into the pocket next the the battery and pry it out. Remember, the '+' side of a new, 2032 battery faces "down" into the case.

    • Insert the new battery with “+” facing downward and the “-“ facing upward.

    I like to write the current date on the battery with a Sharpie marker, so I know how long they last.

    Place the narrower end on first and 'walk' the cover sides back into the groove, moving back toward the pushbutton end.

How can you find a replacement ignition key? I have the fob, but the ignition key is nowhere to be found, didn't notice it missing on our spare from the dealer until recently.

Thank you so so much! I have a 2014 ford escape and at the worst time ever, it decided to alert me my fob battery was low. (C’mon life!) Worst time ever: 2 ER visits in a month and my hands are numb and tingling and difficult to use! I just completed your excellent guide and the task is DONE and I don’t have to bother my husband! The photo and description in steps 3 and 4 are misleading. Prying the notch as shown breaks the back cover sub assembly (Ford logo) instead of causing the back cover sub assembly to detach from the main fob body.

I found it easier to use my fingernail to pry around the joint between the back cover sub assembly and the main body to open the fob.

For some reason I can’t get the cover to snap back together? The little “unlock button” you slide down to take apart the remote is down and won’t slide up to lock it together?
